‘Chelsea poised to announce money-spinning deal’ after ‘crazy’ development

Chelsea are in the box seat to make a return to the Champions League next season after Enzo Maresca’s appointment last summer.

A top-four finish in the Premier League will return the Blues to Europe’s top table and go some way to repay the huge investment made by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital since their 2022 takeover.

But there are still problems behind the scenes, with finance expert Stefan Borson telling Football Insider (26 January) that Chelsea have a £50million hole in their accounts for this season after failing to agree a front-of-shirt sponsorship deal.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has lifted the lid on the latest developments in negotiations.

Chelsea negotiations have been ‘amazing’ after Todd Boehly reveal

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Chelsea are unlikely to agree a sponsorship deal for the rest of this season.

They are still without a front-of-shirt partner after the expiry of their deal with Infinite Athlete last summer (2024).

The failure to seal an agreement comes as Deloitte’s 2025 Money League revealed Chelsea’s overall revenue fell from £513million in 2022-23 to £469million last season.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It is crazy.

“I think what we’ll probably see is someone take it up for next season, but Chelsea will announce it towards the end of this season and try and get more publicity.

“I don’t think we’ll see anyone come in for this season, we’re past that point now with about 15 games to go.

“I don’t see it coming.

“They’re one of the prime clubs in London, they’re very valuable commercial property. It has amazed me that they’ve not been able to do a deal.”

Chelsea miss out on top January target

As well as missing out on a shirt sponsorship deal, Chelsea also failed to strengthen in a key position in the January transfer window.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (4 February) that Chelsea held talks over signing a new goalkeeper but could not find a suitable target.

Maresca has had problems between the sticks this season and dropped Robert Sanchez for Filip Jorgensen in the win over West Ham.
