‘Chelsea ready to agree big-money Moises Caicedo deal – I can’t believe it’

Moises Caicedo has been a star performer for Chelsea this term as they look to return to the Champions League for the 2025-26 campaign.

Caicedo is believed to be a top target for Al-Nassr as the Saudi Pro League side look to add to their midfield options.

The Telegraph reported earlier this month (5 May) that Chelsea are expected to discuss rewarding the 23-year-old with a new contract this summer.

Finance expert Stefan Borson has told Football Insider that Caicedo could recieve a 25 per cent uplift on his current deal at Stamford Bridge.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has revealed what he has learned about the midfielder’s situation at Chelsea.

Chelsea continue ‘very expensive strategy’ with Caicedo deal

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed any pay rise will put Caicedo on a “normal wage” for other clubs, despite him having six years to run on his contract.

Chelsea paid £115million to Brighton in 2023 to land the Ecuador international ahead of Liverpool, and gave him a deal running until 2031.

Wyness insisted the strategy at Stamford Bridge “doesn’t make sense” and claimed he would have “real questions for the owners” if he was chief executive at the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “This is a really strange football strategy from Boehly and Clearlake.

“Maybe there is some merit in having a long-term contract in place. Caicedo is on an eight-year deal, so the question is – why would you increase his wage?

“I can understand it to a degree. Chelsea have got this idea that if you do well, you’ll be rewarded – that has already happened with Jackson and Palmer.

“In a sense, they have set that pattern. Caicedo will want to be at the same level now.

“In theory, they gave out these long-term deals in order to pay much lower base salaries and give the players more security.

“I don’t actually believe, from all I’ve learned, that the salaries are that low. I don’t think they’ve taken a real cut on what they would’ve got elsewhere.

“He’s already on a high base wage, Caicedo, so to increase his wage would probably put him on a normal wage for a three or four-year deal elsewhere.

“Again, it’s just proving a very expensive strategy. I don’t think it’s working out the way Chelsea had hoped.

“It doesn’t seem to make much sense for me, and I’d have had real questions of the owners if I was chief executive.”

Chelsea now frontrunners in Sane race

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (13 May) that Chelsea and Arsenal are the frontrunners in the free transfer race for Leroy Sane.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at Bayern Munich next month and had looked set to pen an extension – but has switched agents and could now quit in the coming weeks.

It is believed the Germany international will also field interest from other overseas clubs but the most lucrative financial packages in European football will come from the Premier League.
