Chelsea spending to skyrocket after off-field deal agreed – Stefan Borson
Chelsea could see the costs of their potential stadium redevelopment skyrocket before they are in a position to start the project.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider building costs have increased over the past few years following the rise in inflation.
The Standard reported on 11 September Chelsea have now finalised the £80million purchase of a 2.47-acre site next to Stamford Bridge as they consider plans to redevelop the stadium.
But the west London club will not take possession of the site until 2027 to provide time for residents to be re-housed during a leaseback period.
Building a stadium is known to be a costly business, with Everton set to spend more than £800million on their new ground, while Tottenham’s state-of-the-art facility set them back around £1billion.
Chelsea need internal agreement to progress stadium project
But Borson insisted Chelsea are currently some way away from beginning work on a new stadium project because they don’t have planning permission or an internal agreement on how to move forward.
“We have had a big period of inflation,” Borson told Football Insider.
“We all know about that from our daily lives and that’s applied also to building costs, particularly in the post-Brexit era as well.
“I think it’s clear that the longer you leave it, the more it’s going to cost.
“But they are not in a position to do anything anyway.

“They haven’t got planning, they haven’t even got an agreement it seems internally, so they are quite a way away.
“The key really for them is to get themselves into a position where they have got alignment across that ownership group, where they understand where the money is coming from and they have got a proper plan for what they are going to do.”
