Injury expert: Mount suffering 'sleepless nights' and 'weight loss' at Chelsea amid surgery news

Chelsea star Mason Mount will have endured “sleepless nights” during his recent dental problems.

So says injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Mount, 22, returned to the matchday squad and played the last five minutes in the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Burnley on 6 November.

The attacking midfielder had missed the previous two games as he was suffering from serious tooth pain.

As quoted by the Daily Mail on 5 November, manager Thomas Tuchel revealed: “Mount lost a bit of weight, he cannot eat properly”.

The Sun reported on 8 November that Mount underwent an emergency dental operation the previous day and will soon join the England squad.

Dinnery detailed how Mount’s ailment will have affected his training routine and match fitness.

“You can’t look at the tooth infection and weight loss in isolation,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“He’s also maybe had some sleepless nights caused by the pain. There could also be issues with dehydration, and fatigue comes into that.

“Thomas Tuchel wants players at optimum levels of performances. If you’ve had serious disruptions to your preparation, it’s right not to take the risk.

“We know that fatigue is a major red flag in terms of injury. But you look at that Chelsea squad and there is plenty of strength in depth there.

“When we talk about squad management, you want to keep players happy.

“Holding him back just makes sense in terms of protecting the player but also in keeping morale up in terms of who replaces him.
