Chelsea to agree shirt sponsor deal? Stefan Borson drops emphatic verdict

Chelsea’s finances have been firmly in the spotlight over the past couple of years after they have recorded heavy losses.

The London giants have so far managed to avoid a spending breach following their intra-group sales at Stamford Bridge.

They sold two club hotels to parent company BlueCo 22 Limited in 2023 for a total of £76.5million, ensuring their losses fell from potentially as high as £166.4million to £89.9million for the 2022-23 financial year alone.

But Chelsea look set to have a significant hole in their accounts for this season as they remain without a front-of-shirt sponsor for the campaign.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider they are now unlikely to agree a deal heading into the final few months of the season.

The west London club struck a £40million-a-year deal with Infinite Athlete two months into last season, but the agreement didn’t continue into this campaign.

Football Insider revealed on 26 September Chelsea wanted to agree a £50million deal for 2024-25 before being forced to significantly lower their asking price.

Chelsea to suffer financial hit after shirt sponsor blow

Borson admitted Enzo Maresca’s side now won’t receive anywhere near the amount they have previously been paid for shirt deals.

He told Football Insider“There is no shirt sponsor.

“There have been loads of rumours that they are about to do a deal.

“Clearly, there is no shirt sponsor coming for this season.

“We are now in mid-February, so there is no shirt sponsor for this season.

“Anybody that puts their logo on the front of the shirt will not be paying very much for it if it does happen, or it could be as part of next season’s deal.

“But the reality is they are not getting the sorts of money that they have been getting historically for front of shirt this season.

“That is a big hole in the profit and loss. Then on top of that, the sleeve issue is really not ideal.

“But they keep spending, so they seem very unconcerned about things.

“We will just have to wait and see how they managed to make ends meet from a PSR perspective when their accounts come out in the next six weeks.”

Chelsea rejected lucrative shirt sponsor offer

Football Insider revealed on 2 October Chelsea rejected a lucrative front-of-shirt sponsorship offer from a gambling company in August last year.

The West Londoners are not looking to agree terms with any gambling firms after pulling out of talks with online betting company Stake in July 2023 following a fan backlash.

The club are believed to have held talks with Qatar Airways and two other airlines about a sponsorship deal, but any agreement has so far failed to materialise.

Deloitte’s 2025 Money League revealed Chelsea’s overall revenue fell from £513million in 2022-23 to £469million last season.
