Kieran Maguire: Todd Boehly to complete multiple new deals after 'surprise' Chelsea update

Todd Boehly is likely to assemble a team of super-smart operators to advise him in his new role as Chelsea chairman.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the behind-the-scenes dynamics at Stanford Bridge following the exits of Bruce Buck and Maria Granovskia.

Chelsea confirmed the departures of the now-former chairman and director on Monday (20 June) and Wednesday (22 June) respectively.

Boehly, who fronted the consortium that completed a £4.25billion takeover of the West London club last month (28 May), will now take on the role of chairman.

It will be a hands-on role for the new part-owner whose sports management background is in Major League Baseball.

Maguire forecasts that the American billionaire is likely to put together a hot-shot team to guide him.

“This has taken people by surprise,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Ultimately, we talk about the Todd Boehy group but it is Clear Lake Capital who are the big players in terms of funding at Chelsea. Clear Lake must have confidence in Boehly with regards to this.

“He wants to get his hands dirty. While he hasn’t got football experience, he does have experience with US sports franchises.

“Although, I do think he might find significant operational differences with a football club because of the additional layer of complications in terms of European competition and the transfer market and so on.

“But he is a smart guy and smart people tend to surround themselves with other smart people they can delegate to. I suspect that’s what we’ll see.”

Chelsea begin their pre-season fixture programme on 16 July against Club America in Las Vegas.

Their 2022-23 campaign opens away to Everton on 6 August.
