Chelsea to sack Enzo Maresca? ‘Huge’ update after outburst

Enzo Maresca has faced questions over his position as Chelsea manager after appearing to aim a dig at the board during his post-match press conference.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the board will not be impressed by the manager aiming public digs.

Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, but it was Maresca’s outburst which grabbed headlines, as he claimed it had been “the worst 48 hours” during his time at the club.

The comment was seemingly aimed at the club’s ownership, drawing large waves of support from the fans who have seen major progress made under the boss.

Despite the comments and apparent growing rift between the manager and the hierarchy, however, Chelsea are unlikely to sack Maresca as things stand.

Chelsea make Enzo Maresca sack decision after public dig

Football Insider revealed on 15 December that Chelsea have no doubts about Maresca’s future despite his comments, and hope to continue to back him.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience working alongside elite-level managers including Sir Alex Ferguson for over a decade at Man United, insisted that the board will not have been impressed but are not currently considering sacking Maresca.

Chelsea have a history of falling out with managers,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s obviously not happy about something that’s happened behind the scenes, but these owners don’t often take kindly to public digs in the press.

“I don’t expect they’ll have been pleased to hear him coming out like that so questions will be asked, but it’ll be resolved behind the scenes rather than making a big thing of it.

“Chelsea won’t want to sack the manager, they’ve backed him heavily in the transfer market and I expect they will continue to do that.

“They’ve invested in what he’s trying to do and they’ve made good progress there, so it’s not part of their plans to all of a sudden tear it all up.

“It’s sometimes hard to predict what owners are going to do, especially at Chelsea, but if things can be resolved before they have to make a huge decision, they will.”

Chelsea plan to back Maresca in January

Despite some concerns about Maresca’s happiness in the job, there are plans in place to back him and strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

Football Insider revealed in September that Chelsea are working to sign a new centre-back, with the position becoming a priority due to their leaky back line.

This comes after Mick Brown told Football Insider in September that Chelsea have “no chance” of competing with Arsenal due to their ongoing defensive issues.

The Blues are aiming to compete at the top of the Premier League table over the coming years, and feel defensive reinforcements would allow them to do so.

However, that is just one of a number of positions Chelsea want to strengthen in as they aim to continue their free spending stance in recent years.
