‘Chelsea to sell Levi Colwill for pure profit’ – Fans rage at Renato Veiga update

Chelsea fans have reacted angrily towards Enzo Maresca on social media after Renato Veiga was dubbed as Juventus’ “new wall” by manager Thiago Motta.

Veiga joined Juventus on loan in January, after a tumultuous transfer window that saw his club change their stance on his future a number of times.

The Blues intially wanted to let the 21-year-old leave temporarily, before a new report revealed Chelsea were only keen on letting Veiga leave permanently. The club then gave way to the former Basel defender, allowing him to leave the club on loan.

Veiga had wanted to leave the London temporarily, in order to play regularly at his preferred position of centre-back, after being used at left-back and defensive-midfield this season by Maresca.

The Portuguese centre-back is now thriving in Italy, with Motta describing him as Juventus‘ “new wall”, while also saying “With him, we play from the back and don’t need to drop the midfielders back.”

Levi Colwill suffers dip in form for Chelsea

Levi Colwill has been viewed as the long-term successor to John Terry at Chelsea, but this season has been difficult for the defender.

Colwill was slammed by Chelsea fans for his performance in a 3-0 loss to Brighton on Friday (14 February).

The England international has been part of a rotating cast at centre-back, that has also included the likes of Axel Disasi, Josh Acheampong, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana.

The lack of stability has clearly impacted the centre-backs quality of play this season, and Chelsea are without a clean sheet in the Premier League since a 0-0 draw with Everton on 22 December.

Colwill has looked at his most comfortable next to Fofana, but the Frenchman has been plagued with injuries since joining from Leicester in 2022.

Renato Veiga thrives in Italy for Juventus

Chelsea fans have urged the club not to sell Veiga, as the Portuguese defender goes from strength-to-strength under Motta in Italy.

One of the main motivators for the former former Augsburg man’s decision to leave West London, was to try and secure his place in Portugal’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Chelsea fans have had their say online, with one saying he “puts all the blame on Maresca” whilst another asked if Colwill might be sold “for pure profit” to boost the Blues’ chances of passing profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
