Chelsea told to agree new Eva Carneiro deal in unexpected twist – expert

Chelsea should be open to bringing Eva Carneiro back to the club after she was hung up to dry by Jose Mourinho in 2015.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

Carneiro spent six years in Chelsea’s medical team between 2009 and 2015 before she shared an infamous bust-up with Jose Mourinho over the treatment of Eden Hazard.

The Gibraltarian physio rushed to help Hazard after he went down injured, but by treating the Belgian he then had to leave the field which sparked Mourinho into a rage.

Carneiro ended up leaving the club and becoming embroiled in a court case regarding the incident, but the 48-year-old hinted at a Chelsea return on social media last month.

Below a post asking her to return, Carneiro replied: “Venga!”, which translates to ‘let’s go’.

Dinnery believes a return to Stamford Bridge would be a “shrewd move” by Chelsea after Carneiro proved she could deliver at an elite level during her time at the club.

She got hung up dry and it was a difficult situation,” Dinnery told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Mourinho obviously had a different mindset but player welfare must always remain at the forefront of your mind.

“It was messy and it wasn’t great but Chelsea were one of the best-performing teams in terms of recovery and the fewest number of injuries when she was on board.

“They generally performed really well and Eva was part of that team during that period that was held in really high regard.

So in terms of working at an elite level you know you want the best working within your department and she’s been there.

It could be quite a fairly shrewd move bringing somebody like her back because she already has that understanding and that knowledge of working at the club.”
