Medical expert issues verdict on Jules Kounde surgery ‘derailing’ Chelsea transfer

Jules Kounde’s surgery will not “derail” his potential switch from Sevilla to Chelsea.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Spanish outlet Sport, as relayed by The Sun last Thursday (16 June), report that Kounde has agreed a five-year deal with Chelsea, although a fee with Sevilla is yet to be struck.

The French centre-back, 23, is now set to undergo surgery after suffering a pelvic injury while away on international duty.

But Dinnery insists that Kounde, who is under contract in Seville until 2024, will not see his move to West London scuppered by the setback.

“Medicals are a list of recommendations about how an injury might impact a player or not going forward,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“With this particular problem, I believe it is an athletic pubalgia or a sports hernia, it’s nothing too dramatic. It was aggravated on international duty.

“He will go under the knife to remedy that painful condition but success rates are really good. We expect a return to training in and around that three to four-week period.

“So, it’s certainly nothing that would derail any potential transfer. Everything fits with Kounde being available at the start of the domestic season.

“We often see at this stage in the year a lot of players who have been managing and playing through conditions getting those underlying issues addressed. You can then go into the new campaign fully fit.”
