‘Chelsea’s Alejandro Garnacho stance becomes clear as Xavi Simons edges closer to move’

Chelsea are pushing to complete the signing of Xavi Simons, and now, they’ve learned what that could mean for their pursuit of Alejandro Garnacho.

As is so often the case at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have been very busy strengthening their squad this summer as they seek to build on their Fifa Club World Cup triumph.

The Blues have already signed the likes of Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, while they’ve freed up serious transfer and salary funds with sales like Djordje Petrovic to Bournemouth, Noni Madueke to Arsenal and Bashir Humphreys to Burnley.

But Chelsea don’t appear to be done yet, with Dutch playmaker Simons seemingly next through the door, alongside compatriot Jorrel Hato.

Chelsea still eyeing up Garnacho

Alongside the raft of signings they’ve already made or are about to make, Chelsea have also been linked with Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine is regarded as one of the top talents in world football right now and registered 11 goals and 10 assists across all competitions for United last season.

However, the Red Devils slumped to 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, meaning there will be no European football at Old Trafford next season.

It’s understood Garnacho is gunning for a move away from United this summer, with Chelsea and Aston Villa among a host of potential suitors.

And according to the Telegraph (28 July), the signing of Simons — which is edging closer — won’t stop Chelsea considering moves for more attacking players, with Enzo Maresca’s side ‘retaining an interest’ in Garnacho.

Joao Felix recently left Chelsea to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, while Christopher Nkunku is being primed for a sale, freeing up further funds and squad space for a Garnacho bid.

Title pressure on Chelsea after another big spend

Football Insider verdict

Chelsea supporters cannot help but get excited by another busy summer of transfer business, especially off the back of Enzo Maresca leading them to Club World Cup and Uefa Conference League titles.

However, this is hardly new for the West Londoners, who have spent big before, only to struggle to compete with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City in the title race.

Chelsea are back in the Champions League and look ready to become contenders once again, and it’s hard to see players like Joao Pedro and Simons — if they can get his move over the line — doing anything else but push for a league title.

But there will be caution among those of a blue persuasion after previous failings, with Chelsea now eight years without a Premier League title.

This summer feels different, but the proof will be in the pudding — or more specifically, on the pitch.
