Chris Sutton blasts ‘knucklehead’ Liverpool fans over Trent Alexander-Arnold
Chris Sutton slammed some Liverpool fans for their reactions towards Trent Alexander-Arnold’s transfer news.
Speculation over the right-back’s future at Anfield has been a topic of keen interest this season, with his contract at the club set to expire in the summer.
Having been linked with a move to Real Madrid for a number of seasons, Alexander-Arnold has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Spanish giants.
The deal has been viewed with frustration from some Liverpool fans, with a number of them hitting out at his perceived lack of loyalty, as the club are set to miss out on gaining a transfer fee for their academy graduate.
However, former Premier League winner, Sutton, has hit back at those fans on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast.
Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘entitled to try something different’
Alexander-Arnold will likely leave Liverpool this summer as a two-time Premier League champion, a Champions League winner, an FA Cup winner, a Carabao Cup winner, and you can even add a Club World Cup to that incredible trophy haul.
Having won every major honour there is to win (aside from the lower-tier European competitions) the right-back has given everything to the club he possibly can.
Speaking to Ian Ladyman on their podcast It’s All Kicking Off! Sutton asked how often you really see a “one-club player” in the modern game and the fact he see’s no issue with Alexander-Arnold wanting to “try something different”, wishing the right-back good luck on his move while attributing the outrage to “nuggets” and “knuckleheads” within the Reds fanbase.
Following a video clip of the podcast being posted online, Sutton followed up his thoughts with a post on X that reads: “It’s crazy and undeserved people criticising Trent Alexander-Arnold if he signs for Real Madrid… after all he’s done and won isn’t he entitled to try something different? What would you do if you were in his boots??”
Liverpool deserve criticism for lack of transfer fee, not Trent Alexander-Arnold
Football Insider Verdict
Playing for Real Madrid is a different level of pressure, one that is earnt by becoming one the world’s best footballers and Alexander-Arnold certainly fits into that category.
Having won all there is to win for his boyhood club, the desire to take the next step and move to join England teammate Jude Bellingham in the Spanish capital is a logical one.

However, for all the criticism he is now facing for wanting to make the move, it is through no fault of Alexander-Arnold’s that his side will miss out on a transfer fee for the right-back.
Liverpool turned down the chance to earn £20million for Alexander-Arnold in January from Real Madrid, with their focus on keeping the side intact for the Premier League title race this season.
What’s more, the club failed to either cash-in on the right-back in the summer, or figure out a contract extension, any criticism should be aimed at the club, rather than Alexander-Arnold himself.
