Chris Sutton: This is why Brendan Rodgers will quit Celtic
By Danny Wright
Chris Sutton believes that Brendan Rodgers will quit Celtic unless they raise their expectations following Tuesday’s loss against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Hoops were demolished by the cash-rich Ligue 1 side, who scored five without reply as Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani all found the net.
Former Celtic striker Sutton, 44, now thinks that there needs to be an inquest into what his old clubs’ aims are following their Champions League humiliation earlier this week and has warned that Rodgers will look to the door if things don’t change.
“The bar is too low at Celtic. He’s come out, he’s criticised the players, the board and the support,” said Sutton on BT Sport’s Live Scottish Football Extra on Friday night.
“Brendan will not be here long-term unless they raise the bar. That wasn’t good enough the other night”
Rodgers is widely seen as one of the best managers that Celtic have had in a very long time after he led them to an unbeaten treble in domestic competitions last season – a run which is still in progress thanks to a good start to the new campaign.
The Hoops were knocked out of the Champions League group stages last term in a group containing Barcelona and Manchester City but they have arguably been dealt a bigger challenge this year with PSG and Bayern Munich among their opponents.
Ultimately, the fans – and clearly Sutton – feel European success is the next step for the Bhoys who are finding things all too easy against fellow Scottish sides.
In other Celtic news, the Hoops have confirmed a new arrival.
