Chris Sutton: Celtic should get rid of this senior player before January deadline

Chris Sutton has urged Celtic to “get rid” of Craig Gordon after Chelsea made a move for the senior goalkeeper.

Sky Sports reported in their transfer blog on Friday (15:22 pm) that Brendan Rodgers has confirmed an offer has been made for his player who has 18 months left on his contract.

The Bhoys manager was insistent that Gordon is a player they want “to keep” and “build the team around”.

Gordon has been a key figure for Rodgers side this season as he has helped them clinch the Scottish League Cup as they are now on their way to winning the Scottish Premiership in record fashion.

But former Premier League striker Sutton was clear in what the club should do with Gordon after Chelsea’s approach.

“For £3million, sell him,” Sutton told BT Sport. “He’s improved this season but I think there are other keepers out there. If Celtic get £3million, bite their arm off for Gordon, get rid of him.

“If you are Gordon, you are probably thinking this could be my last big pay day, that is just the way it is. But, I’m still not totally convinced and I think he is a lot better than last season.”

Gordon previously played in England’s top flight for a five-year period with north east outfit Sunderland.

If the Scotland international were to make a move to Stamford Bridge then he would have to compete for a first team place with Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgian has played every minute in the Premier League this season as the London-based club top the table.

It will be extremely unlikely that Gordon will dethrone the Belgian from his first team spot in the league as the Blues aim to win their first trophy under Italian Antonio Conte.
