Chris Sutton destroys manager after explanation for Celtic player snub

By Danny Wright

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has destroyed England Under-21s manager Aidy Boothroyd for his explanation as to why he snubbed Patrick Roberts in his latest squad.

Roberts, 20, failed to earn a spot in the latest Young Lions squad despite impressing for Celtic in their opening games this season, especially in big wins against Rangers and Anderlecht.

However Boothroyd decided to overlook the Manchester City loanee and instead called up New York City youngster Jack Harrison because he has “had more game time” than Roberts, the England Under-21 boss was quoted by the Daily Record as saying.

Sutton has taken to his personal Twitter account to laugh off Boothroyd’s reasoning behind his squad selection, with the simple fact that Harrison will have undoubtedly had more game time because the MLS season has been in process for the last six months.

“Aidy Boothroyd’s explanation that Harrison has more game time and more assists than Roberts is profound….The MLS season started in March,” he said.

Harrison has made 32 appearances in the MLS this year for New York City, scoring 10 goals and supplying three assists in the process, so his call up is perhaps more than warranted.

But Roberts is without doubt playing alongside better players and still sticking out as one of the best of the bunch, especially after he pulled the strings in the 2-0 Old Firm win against Rangers and the 3-0 Champions League humbling of Anderlecht, both away from Parkhead.
