Chris Sutton tears into Celtic mainstay as war of words continues

By Danny Wright

Chris Sutton has refused to quell his criticism of Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon after the Parkhead veteran hit out at the former striker for his previous remarks.

Gordon has accused Sutton of having an agenda against him after the BT Sport pundit continually pointed the finger at the shot-stopper for making a series of “high-profile” mistakes while playing in Brendan Rodgers’ squad.

Now, Sutton has made it clear that he has nothing against Gordon on a personal level, but has continued his war of words with the Scotland international by tearing into him for the way that he has handled the criticism.

“Craig is entitled to his opinion. Of course, he could have phoned me, I was surprised he did it in the way that he did,” said Sutton, as shown in a video on BT Sport Football’s official Twitter account on Wednesday prior to the win against Dundee in the League Cup.

“It’s not personal, there’s no agenda, there’s no campaign – it goes with the territory when you play at big clubs but Craig has made high-profile errors.

“The three goals that Celtic have conceded this season have been his fault and that’s just the way it is. I put him in my team of the week this week so all this personal stuff is absolute nonsense.

“He’s just a little bit thin-skinned.”

Gordon has been a mainstay of the Celtic first-team under the leadership of Rodgers and played a major part in helping the club win the domestic treble without a defeat last season.

However it seems that although the Hoops are invincible on the pitch, they are far from it off it with the harsh assessment of his performances from pundits like Sutton, who is known for his outspoken approach to his job.

Ex-Sunderland goalkeeper Gordon has made 16 appearances across all competitions already this season, playing every minute of every game he has been able to play in.

In other Celtic news, Sutton has chosen who has the best goalkeeper between the Hoops and bitter rivals Rangers.
