Chris Sutton has claimed in the Daily Record that he is “mystified” as to what is happening at Celtic with Charly Musonda.

The wide forward, 21, arrived at Parkhead in the January transfer window on an 18-month loan from Chelsea but has made just seven appearances in all competitions for Brendan Rodgers’ side, only two of which have been starts.

The Belgium Under-21 international showed a flash of brilliance when he set up Callum McGregor’s winner against Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League last month, but since then he has done little of note.

In the last three Scottish Premiership fixtures, Rodgers has not even used Musonda off the bench and now Sutton has questioned the use of the young attacker.

“I was also impressed with the signing of Charly Musonda, even though I’m mystified by what’s happening with him,” Sutton wrote in a Record column.

“Scoreless with 20 minutes to
go at Motherwell last weekend, I would have thought Rodgers might have called for the Chelsea loanee who was signed to break down packed defences.”

Football Insider verdict

Musonda is yet to have much of a chance to shine at Celtic and it is little wonder that Sutton is perplexed. It can be assumed there are not issues behind the scenes as the young Belgian has been in the matchday squad for each of the team’s league matches since his arrival. However it is important to remember that Musonda is only two months into an 18-month loan deal from Chelsea and still has a lot of time to prove his worth. His one bit of brilliance against Zenit shows he can step up in the big European nights and that is exactly what Rodgers needs next season in the Champions League group stages as Celtic aim to take the next step in their European development.
