Chris Sutton impressed by ‘clever’ Aston Villa signing amid Morgan Rogers claim

Aston Villa had a busy winter transfer window as they look to increase their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Unai Emery’s side signed four new players over the past month, while numerous stars left the club on loan or permanently.

Many of these additions have come at the right time for Aston Villa, especially after the 1-0 defeat to Brentford on the weekend halted any momentum they had been building.

Now, ahead of their clash against Bournemouth on Saturday, Chris Sutton has hailed the signing of Tammy Abraham, who rejoined Villa in late January.

Chris Sutton: Aston Villa’s signing of Tammy Abraham is clever

Aston Villa have had mixed fortunes up top this season.

Ollie Watkins struggled to find the back of the net at Villa Park until a recent run saw him net five times in six Premier League matches.

Nevertheless, it was clear that a new attacker was needed. Therefore, Emery splashed the cash to bring in Abraham from Besiktas.

The former Chelsea forward was at Villa for the 2018-19 campaign, where he netted 26 times in 40 matches in all competitions to help return the Birmingham outfit to the Premier League.

Since then, he has gone on to play in the Blues’ first team, before moving to Roma and then Besiktas.

Now, when reflecting on the signing to BBC Sport on 5 February, Sutton was quick to praise the addition.

In one part of his prediction, he said: “I do think Villa will score – Morgan Rogers is always dangerous, and Tammy Abraham is a clever signing up front – but Bournemouth will edge it.”

He then went on to predict Bournemouth to win 2-1, with the Cherries returning to form in recent weeks.

What has Unai Emery said about Bournemouth ahead of the clash?

For Villa, a trip to the Vitality Stadium will be a tough one.

The Cherries have won their last two matches in all competitions, including a 3-2 victory over Liverpool two weeks back.

Therefore, with Emery suffering two losses in his last three Premier League games, an away trip against the Cherries will be the last thing he wants.

Speaking about Bournemouth ahead of the game, he admitted he has done a lot of analysis of the Cherries’ recent home times ahead of the game.

He told BBC Sport on 6 February: “The result they had at home, they lost 3-2 against Arsenal and they won 3-2 against Tottenham and 3-2 against Liverpool.

“Those three matches, five goals, winning two matches, losing one, this is the analysis we have. We’ve deeply analysed how we can get our best performance, but it will be very difficult.”
