Chris Sutton makes bold Scottish Premiership prediction after Celtic defeat

Chris Sutton believes the end of Celtic’s unbeaten run is good for Scottish football and says there could be a title race in the Scottish Premiership this season.

The Hoops’ 69-match unbeaten domestic run came to a end in emphatic fashion as Brendan Rodgers’ side were beaten 4-0 by Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday afternoon.

It was the first time Celtic had lost a domestic match since the 2-1 defeat at St Johnstone in May 2016, 585 days ago. The defeat also marked Rodgers’ first loss as Hoops boss against Scottish opposition.

Celtic legend Sutton heaped praise on his former club for their achievement, which he believes will not be repeated.

“A huge congratulations to Celtic for that incredible domestic run, 69 games before before they went down is some achievement, we will not see the likes of this again in Scottish football,” Sutton told BT Sport.

However, the former Hoops striker believes that his old side’s defeat will benefit Scottish football and says there could be a title race on in the Scottish Premiership this season.

“It’s good for Scottish football for the rest of the sides that they’ve seen Celtic taken down today. But you have to take your hat off to Celtic for this incredible achievement,” he said.

“I know that all Scottish teams and Scottish managers out there will really respect the job that Brendan Rodgers has done at Celtic, but there is hope for the other clubs now and we could have a title race on.”

It’s a bold claim from Sutton after just one defeat for Celtic. Celtic have won the title for the past six consecutive seasons and finished 30 points ahead of second-placed Aberdeen last season, winning 34 of their 38 matches.

Despite today’s loss, the Hoops remain two points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, with a game in hand over second-place Aberdeen.

Rodgers’ side will be looking to return to winning ways when they face Partick Thistle, who are at the bottom of the table, in their next game on Saturday.
