Chris Sutton must be joking with what he said about Man City, he’ll be forced to eat his own words

Chris Sutton will be forced to eat his own words at the end of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign as Man City battle for the title.

Arsenal’s title hopes took a hit after drawing with Sunderland, being pegged back by Brian Brobbey in added time at the Stadium of Light, while the Citizens totally embarrassed Liverpool.

Jeremy Doku was electric for Man City as Pep Guardiola‘s side moved within four points of the league leaders, with the players heading into the international break on a high. Their rivals, not so much.

All signs point towards a resurgence at the Etihad Stadium, shortly after a very difficult start to the 2025-26 campaign, but the story is not unfamiliar to those in Manchester.

Maybe Sutton has forgotten what Man City have achieved previously.

Chris Sutton is at risk of embarrassment over his Premier League title race comments

Arsenal are said to have an advantage in the title race, and it appears that Sutton agrees with that sentiment, but his recent quotes are only likely to backfire on him if history repeats itself.

Speaking on the BBC’s Monday Night Club, Sutton said: “I don’t think they’re out of the woods yet. I don’t think we can say they’re title challengers just yet based on beating a Liverpool team.

“I think Arsenal will win the title, and win it comfortably. If you look at the start of City’s season, we all would have had doubts when they lost to Tottenham and then Brighton.

He also spoke about City’s over-reliance on Erling Haaland and how they could be affected should he get injured, but history shows that Guardiola already knows how to deal with that.

Man City will be hoping for history to repeat itself

During the 2019-20 campaign, where Sergio Aguero was sidelined for much of it, Bernardo Silva, as well as Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, were transformed into false-nines, and City won the league title.

In addition to that, during the 2022-23 campaign, the Citizens were behind their rivals by eight points at one point in the season, but managed to pull it back, overtaking with ease in the final few weeks.

While Mikel Arteta‘s side have gained a lot more experience now, they are still showing signs of cracking under pressure, especially after their trip to the Stadium of Light, and City are just finding their feet.

Despite such a difficult start to the season, Guardiola’s side are only four points off top spot, and if current trends continue, it should not be a surprise when City lift their 11th league title.
