Chris Sutton names Ruben Amorim’s ‘biggest issue’ in major sack verdict ahead of Sunderland clash

Ruben Amorim is quickly running out of time to turn things around as Man United prepare to welcome Sunderland to Old Trafford.

Having finally sealed their second win of the Premier League season against Chelsea, Man United then lost 3-1 to Brentford in what was an embarrassing result away from home.

Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal in Man United colours, but it was nowhere near enough as Bruno Fernandes missed from the penalty spot to really rub salt into the Red Devils’ wounds.

Football Insider understands that Amorim is unlikely to walk away from his post, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the rest of the hierarchy have been left with a difficult decision over the manager’s future.

Shouts for the manager to be sacked could become even louder if United lose to Sunderland on Saturday, 4 October.

Writing is on the wall for Ruben Amorim at Man United

Discussing Amorim’s current situation, Chris Sutton believes that few figures at Old Trafford actually believe he has the ability to turn his fortunes around. He was then asked if the writing is on the wall for the manager.

Speaking live on BBC’s Football Focus (4 October, 12:08pm), he said: “I think it is [the writing is on the wall]. Man United fans expect more. Last season, Ruben Amorim… Everyone could cut him a bit of slack, but the evidence of this season…

“They’ve scraped home against Burnley, beat 10-man Chelsea. I don’t think many people further down the line believe he can turn it around. That’s the biggest issue.

“If Man United don’t get over the line today, he’s going to be under even more pressure.”

Who could replace Amorim at Old Trafford?

Crystal Palace‘s Oliver Glasner is admired by Man United, but he is not the only manager under consideration as the pressure grows on the club to sack the current head coach.

Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva are both reportedly candidates to take over should Ratcliffe pull the plug on Amorim’s rebuild, which seems to be going absolutely nowhere at this point in time.

It would not be difficult to attract a new figure to the Theatre of Dreams, just based on how huge the club is, but the challenge on hand is so much bigger than anyone can anticipate.

Gareth Southgate might be able to deal with the pressure, given what he experienced with the England national team, but it appears unlikely that he will be the next manager of Man United.
