Chris Sutton stunned by ‘ferocious’ Jacob Murphy in Newcastle v Crystal Palace

Jacob Murphy left Chris Sutton shocked after what he did for Newcastle United during their clash with Crystal Palace.

The Magpies went into that clash with Oliver Glasner’s side at St James’ Park on Wednesday (16 April) knowing victory would lift them into third in the Premier League table.

With Newcastle manager Eddie Howe still absent through illness, Jason Tindall once again took charge of the side as he had in the 4-1 thrashing of Man United at the weekend.

They would then make a perfect start to their latest outing, going 1-0 up early thanks to an incredible strike from Murphy.

Jacob Murphy produces spectacular opener vs Crystal Palace

Already this season Murphy has produced a number of outstanding performances for Newcastle to aid their success in both league and cup.

With just 13 minutes on the clock against Crystal Palace, the 30-year-old would make another big impact for his side.

Picking up the ball on the right-hand side of the penalty area near the byline, the winger then unleashed an unstoppable strike past Dean Henderson in the oppositon goal.

Given the angle from which he scored, and the power he put into the strike, Sutton was left in awe of that goal from Murphy.

Providing his reaction to that Newcastle opener while commentating on the game for Sky Sports, the former Blackburn and Celtic title winner said: (7:44pm): “You can’t shoot from there!

“Jacob Murphy in brilliant form, he’s had one hell of a start to the game putting in some delicious balls, but he rifles this one in.

“Just goes for power, I think he does mean it. Such a narrow angle he has no right to shoot from there. Has a little look and then laces through the ball that’s a ferocious finish!

“Got to have some confidence to even think about trying to beat a ‘keeper of Henderson’s quality and he does, bang, into the roof of the net, that is some finish!”

Newcastle made light work of Palace in the first half, going in 4-0 up at the break.

Newcastle United to be delighted with winger plans

Football Insider Verdict

There had been some questions about the future of the 30-year-old at St James’ Park given his side’s big plans for the summer transfer window.

However it has been claimed that Murphy remains firmly in Howe’s plans at Newcastle despite targeting another right winger, with the club not interested in letting him go come the summer.

Given the way things are going right now that seems like it is absolutely the right stance for the Magpies to take before the window opens.

The winger has emerged as a vital player at St James’ Park with a string of goals and assists in recent months, showing how important he can be as the club look to become regular trophy winners.

This goal against Crystal Palace was yet another reminder of that, considering shooting from that angle felt unthinkable, especially with a goalkeeper in the form of Henderson to beat.

As a result the fact that Newcastle are taking a clear view that Murphy will not be leaving in the summer is going to delight everyone connected with the club.
