Chris Sutton takes subtle swipe at Rangers ahead of semi-final clash v Celtic

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has taken a subtle swipe at Rangers ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm Scottish Cup semi-final on Sunday.

The BT Sport pundit was congratulating Motherwell on reaching the Scottish Cup Final, and made the claim that the Hoops would be joining them in the final if they ‘turn up’.

“Congratulations to Motherwell, superb win. Looks like it’s Motherwell standing between Celtic and the double treble if Celtic turn up tomorrow….” Sutton said, on his personal Twitter account.

The Bhoys are firm favourites for the match, and are unbeaten in three games against their bitter rivals so far this season, but the Gers will take hope from their excellent performance in the goalless draw between the sides at Celtic Park in December, and how they ran the Hoops close in the match between the teams last month.

Football Insider verdict

Sutton knows exactly what he is doing here, winding up Rangers fans to get a reaction, and it will probably work going by the mentions he is currently getting on Twitter. But there is some truth in his statement, in that the Hoops will be big favourites for the game and should win the match if they perform at their best on the day. However, anything can happen in a derby, and Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers won’t think for a second about taking a win against the Ibrox side for granted, and he will be expecting a very tough match, similar to the recent games between the sides.
