Outspoken football pundit Chris Sutton has hailed the display of Tottenham star Dele Alli following England’s 1-0 defeat against Germany on Wednesday evening.
The Three Lions suffered a loss in Germany with a Lukas Podolski stunner the only strike able to separate the two sides.
The match also marked Alli’s 16th cap in his country’s shirt, where he played 71 minutes of the friendly and his display received many plaudits.
One fan was former Premier League striker Sutton, who labelled the 20-year-old starlet’s performance as “sensational”.
“Dele Alli was sensational and I can understand the temptation to play him in midfield against Lithuania on Sunday and bring in Raheem Sterling wide on the left,” told Sutton to Friday’s print edition of the Daily Mail (page 86).
“While the Manchester City winger’s form is good enough to warrant a starting berth, Alli would be wasted in a deeper role.
“England need his creativity in those forward areas. I love the cleverness of his runs, drifting into the box late. He knows how to run, when to run and to have that instinct at such a young age is unbelievable.
“Given the way he ghosts into the box, it is no fluke that he has scored 14 Premier League goals for Tottenham this season.”
Alli has been in fine form since making the switch to north London from League One outfit MK Dons in the 2015 winter window.
He has starred in a stunning 85 matches in total for Tottenham, bringing a return of 27 goals and 19 assists.
Spurs fans will now be hoping his impressive form continues as they look to catch Chelsea at the top of the table before the season’s end.
Tottenham will travel to face Burnley at Turf Moor after the international break and a victory could see them move five points clear of Manchester City in third, depending on results elsewhere.
In other Tottenham news, this proven Premier League attacker has revealed Daniel Levy tried to bring him in on deadline day.
