Chris Wood: This is what Leeds have to do to secure promotion

By Danny Wright

Chris Wood believes that Leeds have to treat each of their 15 remaining games as ‘cup finals’ this season if they want to successfully chase promotion to the Premier League.

Talking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, the 25-year-old also said that his teammates are more than capable of chipping in with goals, despite Wood’s domination of the club’s goals this season.

The New Zealand international leads the way with 21 goals in all competitions – 16 more than Leeds’ next highest scorer, Souleymane Doukara.

“We’re all capable of scoring goals,” Wood said in the Yorkshire Evening Post. “The whole team knows how to and once people get into those situations they’ll take their chances. I think it’s just about working in training on opening teams up a bit more to get those clear-cut chances.

“We’ve got 15 massive games to go and every game is probably a cup final now. We need to make sure we’re strong and do what we have to do.”

Wood has seven goals in his last seven games for the West Yorkshire club and will be hoping to make amends after firing a blank in his last game against Cardiff on Saturday which they lost 2-0.

Leeds face Bristol City on Tuesday night in their next Championship fixture. Wood will be hoping he can help his side catch up to Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, who are currently in third place four points ahead.

A victory would see them leapfrog Reading into fourth if they were to lose to Brentford.

However Leeds’ main concern would be to pull away from Norwich in seventh, who are currently four points behind Garry Monk’s side with 50 points.

The Canaries face a testing tie against league leaders Newcastle, meaning that Tuesday’s clash at Elland Road could be critical to the club’s play-off hopes.
