‘Christian Eriksen rejects stunning Wrexham approach after Man United exit’

Christian Eriksen has rejected the chance to join ambitious Championship side Wrexham following his recent departure from Manchester United.

Eriksen left the Red Devils upon the expiry of his contract in June, after a mixed few years at the club following his 2022 move from Brentford.

His best spell in English football came during his time at Tottenham, where he made 305 appearances and scored 69 goals for the North London outfit between 2013 and 2020.

The Danish international’s career was put on hold in 2021 after he suffered a cardiac arrest while playing at the European Championships for his country, yet he made a full recovery and looked to be back to his best in short spell at Brentford.

Championship new-boys Wrexham have made worldwide headlines over the last few years due to their Hollywood ownership, and while the Red Dragons have been linked with signing Jamie Vardy in a move that could come off, their shock approach to capture Eriksen looks a lot less likely to come to fruition.

Eriksen rejects Wrexham move in favour of top-flight stay

The Mail (25 July) have revealed that Eriksen has been approached by the ever-ambitious Wrexham following their promotion to the Championship, which was their third in a row after a rapid rise from the National League over the last few years.

Despite their attempt at signing the 33-year-old, he has rejected their advances because he wants to continue his career in a top-flight competition.

They state that Eriksen is believed to have been approached by clubs in Saudi Arabia, the USA, Turkey and Brazil, while his representative Martin Schoots told the Mail: “Wrexham are really upgrading everything both on and off the field, and it is a hugely impressive project…but Christian still wants to play in a first-tier competition and he absolutely wants to stay in Western Europe. There are some contacts going on but it has to suit both sides.”

Wrexham’s ambition will not end at Eriksen rejection

Football Insider verdict

Being knocked back by Eriksen will likely not come as a surprise to Wrexham chiefs, and the fact they even attempted to sign a player of his calibre while only just being promoted to the second-tier speaks to their ambition to get the club into the Premier League as soon as possible.

They have already achieved what many thought was impossible by winning three straight promotions to go from the National League to the Championship, and they are making it clear that they are not resting on their laurels this season despite their success.

Along with Vardy, Wrexham have been linked with a move to sign Leeds striker Patrick Bamford in recent times, while they recently wrapped up the capture of in-demand Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

Kieffer Moore is another who could join the North Wales outfit amid interest in his services, and they are certainly not done in the transfer market yet after sources told Football Insider in May that Wrexham will have a huge £30m transfer budget to work with this summer.

Whether their ambition will pay off in the second-tier next term remains to be seen, but the Red Dragons are certainly trying their hardest to establish themselves as a new force in English football, and their shock attempts to sign high-profile players will certainly not end just because of Eriksen’s rejection.
