Danny Mills has suggested that Tottenham utility man Eric Dier will be looking for a move away from north London after falling out of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team plans.
The former Manchester City and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that the versatile enforcer has fallen down the pecking order when it comes to the manager’s options in midfield, while he is also a makeshift option at the heart of the defence.
The 25-year-old has lost both games he has started for Tottenham this season, acting as captain during the League Cup defeat to Colchester before playing as a defensive midfielder in the 3-0 loss against Brighton on Saturday.
With the likes of Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele and Moussa Sissoko all ahead of him in the running for a midfield spot, Mills suggests that Dier will have to start looking at a move away if he is to play regular football as well as add to his 40 England caps.
Mills told Football Insider: “I think obviously he’s still got something to offer but he’s clearly not in Pochettino’s plans at the moment. Obviously Harry Winks is ahead of him, brought in Ndombele, got others like Sissoko and Eriksen all vying for those midfield berths.
“It looks like the outside, if he wants to play regular first-team football and get anywhere near back to the England side on the regular, he’ll have to look at a move away sooner rather than later.”
Dier has played just three times across all competitions this season, having been left unused on the bench for all but one of the club’s Premier League games prior to his appearance against Southampton.
He has 213 matches under his belt for the north Londoners after joining from Sporting CP, with 11 goals and nine assists.
