Clinton Morrison wowed by ‘exciting’ rarely-seen Wolves player vs Liverpool: ‘Impressive’
Wolves slumped to yet another defeat on Saturday as Liverpool cruised to a routine 2-1 victory over the Premier League’s bottom side.
Ryan Gravenberch and Florian Wirtz both got on the scoresheet for the hosts as they inflicted a seventh straight defeat on Rob Edwards since his return to the Old Gold side.
While Santiago Bueno did manage to pull a goal back, the match was further embarrassment for the visitors as Wolves look to avoid Derby’s record-low points total in the Premier League.
However, there were some highlights, including Mateus Mane’s first league start for the Old Gold.
Clinton Morrison raves about Mateus Mane in Wolves defeat
Mane has been one of the only positives for Wolves this season.
The youngster has broken into the first-team picture throughout the campaign as he looks to become the next big thing at Molineux.
Against Arsenal, Mane picked up an assist before Wolves were eventually defeated 2-1.
- Mane joined Wolves from Rochdale in 2024
- After impressing in the academy, he made his first-team debut against Brighton at the end of last season
- Since then, he has continued to be involved in the first team as he looks to become a star player at Molineux
Now, after being rewarded with his first Premier League start against Liverpool, Clinton Morrison was quick to praise his performance on Sky Sports News on 27 December.
He said: “I tell you who is offering something for Wolves is the youngster, Mane. He’s been exciting.”
He then added: “Mane has done ever so well. He picked the ball up, went past Kerkez and should have really slipped in Arokodare, but he had a shot, and it went over the bar…the young lad has been impressive so far.”
How did Mane perform vs Liverpool?
According to Fotmob on 27 December, Mane had an okay match against Liverpool.
The winger was clearly an attacking threat as he managed a total of four shots, two of which hit the target, while also having one touch inside Liverpool’s box.
However, there are clearly qualities that need improving upon, with the youngster failing to hit a Wolves man with any of his crosses, as well as having a zero per cent dribble success rate.

Nevertheless, the performance was a breath of fresh air for the travelling fans who have had few players this season who have actually looked to take the game towards the opposition.
Hopefully, going forward, Edwards can continue to improve Mane and get him up to speed, ready for their inevitable Championship campaign next season.
