Peter Reid delivers verdict on Everton midfield options

By Matt Farr

Everton legend Peter Reid has hailed the midfield talent that Ronald Koeman has at his disposal.

The midfield has drawn plenty praise from the media this season, in particular the efforts of Idrissa Gueye and recently established youngster Tom Davies.

The former has been impressive since his arrival from relegated Aston Villa in the summer, missing just three of Everton’s Premier League games.

18-year-old talent Davies, meanwhile, has appeared in Everton’s last six games after bursting onto the scene at the start of the season.

The Toffees recently added Manchester United outcast Morgan Schneiderlin to their ranks, and Reid admitted he can’t wait to see the France international in action.

Reid, who won two first division titles with Everton, revealed his excitement at the vast array of midfield talent within the club’s ranks, when speaking to the club’s official website on Tuesday.

He said: “Schneiderlin is a really good footballer and a really good buy. He will complement Gueye in that midfield anchor. There is a nice balance to that partnership.

“I’ve also been really impressed with Tom Davies as well – who looks the real deal – so there is plenty of competition in midfield, especially when you add James McCarthy and the experience of Gareth Barry.

“Of course Mo Besic is out at the moment but he will come back into it as well. You are looking at a good blend of midfield players there.”

Everton are currently 7th in the Premier League, nine points off the top four after three back-to-back victories this month.

The midfield unit has been integral to the Toffees’ recent form, which has seen them score 12 goals and concede just twice since their last league defeat in December.
