Collymore: This is a growing problem for Liverpool (not defending)

By Matt Farr

Ex-Liverpool man Stan Collymore has claimed his former club are lacking a leader on the pitch and it is a growing problem for the team.

Collymore, who made 64 appearances for the Reds, thinks the Merseyside club;s lack of leadership is a cause of concern moving forward.

Jordan Henderson is the current Liverpool captain, but Collymore does not believe that he is up to the task of his predecessor, Steven Gerrard.

“I’m struggling to see any leadership out on the pitch,” he told the Mirror.

“What they need is someone who recognises the time in a game when they need to slow things down. Someone who puts out a hand, gets on the ball and dictates the tempo so they are still playing effectively.

“I guess that’s aimed at skipper Jordan Henderson more than anyone else, and some Liverpool fans will argue he can do it.

“I’m still not convinced, though. Oh, for a Steven Gerrard in his pomp.”

Gerrard was the man at the heart of the Reds’ quest for Premier League glory for over a decade, replacing Sami Hyypia as team captain in 2003.

Before joining MLS outfit LA Galaxy in 2015, Gerrard led Liverpool to one FA Cup, one League Cup and one Champions League title.

Henderson, however, has yet to lead Liverpool to any such glory since taking over as club captain.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently third in the Premier League with nine wins from 14 games, dropping out of second place with Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Bournemouth.

But despite the defensive collapse that saw his side concede their two-goal advantage with just 15 minutes left to play, Klopp is confident his side can still keep up with their title rivals.

The Reds can get their title challenge back on track against West Ham at Anfield on Sunday.

In other Liverpool news, Klopp has left these six players out of his Barcelona training camp.
