Collymore rips into Tottenham 23-year-old, states he can’t play this position
By Derek Smithson
Stan Collymore states that Tottenham ace Eric Dier doesn’t have the “nouse” or “pace” to play as a defensive midfielder.
The 23-year-old was in the heart of England’s midfield on Tuesday night as they suffered a 3-2 defeat away to France in an international friendly.
He is a versatile player that has predominantly play in the centre for his nation, but has also been used as a defender for Spurs by Mauricio Pochettino
Collymore feels that Dier isn’t strong enough to play as a midfielder and is much better suited to being in the backline.
“Prefer him [Dier] as one of a back 3, doesn’t have the nouse yet or pace seemingly to step up to top drawer DM [defensive midfielder],” Collymore wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Dier was severely tested on Tuesday against the French pair of N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba, who are considered to be two of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
The Spurs man look set to be a permanent fixture in the England team going forward and it’s unclear on what his best position is.
He faces a difficult battle for his club side to earn a spot in the midfield, with the likes of Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks also in contention.
Collymore has advised Dier to become a specialist defender, but the lacks of top quality English midfielders could prevent that.
