Comments from Rangers flop give staggering insight into Caixinha reign
Rangers flop Carlos Pena has claimed that former Ibrox boss Pedro Caixinha was aware of his problems with alcohol during their time in Glasgow together – and it has given an incredible insight into the sort of things Caixinha was doing during his time at Ibrox.
The Mexican midfielder claimed in a TV interview in his homeland, as quoted by the Scottish Sun, that Caixinha was aware of his problems – which has since seen him check into a rehab centre owned by boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez.
Pena’s time at Ibrox was blighted by, what Caixinha called, fitness problems although it is pretty obvious that his fitness problems were being caused by his drinking.
If Caixinha was aware of this as Pena says then it begs the question why the Portuguese coach insisted on trying to get him into his side and didn’t try to get him help for his off-field problems instead.
To then sign hin for Cruz Azul and get the exact same results – and only then throw the towel in – is quite remaarkable from Caixinha and comes across as a complete disregard for the player.

With Pena now getting treatment for his drinking problems, the 28-year-old can hopefully get his career back on track and show the kind of form that earned him big-money moves in his homeland.
Had someone else taken the reins at Ibrox sooner perhaps the Gers could have been more active in getting the player the help he needed as well as getting some sort of return from the former international star.
It’s unclear to what extent Caixinha’s successor at Ibrox, Graeme Murty, knew about Pena’s drinking and if Caixinha has been aware of it you would have to hope it was something that others at the club would have been made aware of.
Whether Caixinha did or not remains to be seen but it wouldn’t come as a surprise if it was something that was never shared beyond Caixinha and his allies in his backroom staff.
There were definite signs of a talented player in the 14 appearanes Pena made for the Gers but it now looks unlikely he’ll return to Ibrox.
Hopefully Pena can get himself healthy and back playing again soon – and if he does it will be have been with little help from Caixinha.
