Confirmed: Rangers given green light to enter talks with international central midfielder

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has confirmed that Rangers have been given the green light to enter talks with Scott Arfield.

The Canada international’s Turf Moor deal is due to expire at the end of the season and the Gers have been allowed to enter negotiations over bringing him to Ibrox.

Premier League high-flyers Burnley announced via their official Twitter account on Thursday that Rangers are pushing to sign the 29-year-old.

Dyche is hopeful that Arfield is able to agree terms with the Glasgow giants after playing a key role in his first-team this season by making 20 appearances in all competitions.

“We want him to have a bright future and I think there’s a good chance of that (move) happening,” he said.

Arfield has been sidelined with a calf injury since February and the Scottish Sun has recently reported that the left-sided flyer has agreed a deal with the Gers.

At Burnley, Arfield has operated mainly as a left-winger.

However for Canada, he has earned all of his 12 caps by playing as a central midfielder, scoring one goal and supplying three assists in the process.

Football Insider verdict

Arfield will be a good signing for Rangers as he would be available for free and is definitely someone who can improve the quality of the first-team. He plays in the same position as Jamie Murphy but both wide-men are able to play on both wings so there’s a chance that the next manager will be able to have a lot of options in the wide area of the pitch. Arfield may even be an upgrade on Murphy, who is expected to join permanently from Brighton in the summer. Arfield has been ever-present in a team much higher up the table than Brighton, where Murphy really struggled to get a game.

In other Rangers news, Mark Allen would become a Gers legend if he signs this Celtic-mad midfielder who rejected Walter Smith.
