Confirmed: Wolves agree long-term enforcer deal

By Danny Wright

Wolves have confirmed that they have completed the signing of Rio Ave’s Roderick Miranda.

A statement on the club’s official website on Tuesday said that the defensive enforcer has signed for an “undisclosed fee” from the Portuguese top flight and has penned a long-term deal.

Miranda will be contracted to Wolves until 2021 and has became Nuno Espirito Santo’s first signing since taking over from Paul Lambert as manager.

Miranda has spent the last four years of his career with Rio Ave, which is where Santo began his managerial career.

The Portuguese centre-back moved to the Rio Grande after rising through the youth ranks at Portuguese giants Benfica, where he played 15 times in the senior team.

He made 37 appearances across all competitions for Rio Ave the last season, scoring three goals and supplying two assists.

Miranda even managed to find the net against Santo’s former side Porto when they lost 4-2 at the Stadio Do Dragao in January.

Wolves are no strangers to buying players from Portugal with Helder Costa and Ivan Cavaleiro both making switches from the Iberian peninsula over the last year.

Football Insider Verdict

Miranda certainly seems like a good signing on paper and he has done well in his four years at Rio Ave. Santo clearly knows his former club well so that is definitely one of the plus points in snapping up a foreign manager. However many arrivals from overseas can find it hard to adapt to playing in England, and the Championship is expected to be as tough as ever next season as Wolves look to fight their way back into the Premier League. It’s good that Wolves are signing players early, it’s always better to get new faces among the ranks as soon as possible rather that at the last minute.
