Conor Hourihane posts Twitter message to Aston Villa supporters

By Amir Mir

Conor Hourihane has expressed his delight on Twitter after signing for Aston Villa and thanked supporters for their warm messages.

The club confirmed on their official Twitter account on Thursday morning that the 25-year-old has made a switch from Championship rivals Barnsley.

The highly-rated playmaker is the club’s fifth signing of the January transfer window and third in the space of 24 hours.

Villa purchased his Tykes teammate James Bree on Wednesday, including adding Basel midfielder Birkir Bjarnason.

The trio followed Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury and on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

After Hourihane made his switch from Oakwell to Villa Park, this was his message to supporters as posted on his personal Twitter account.

“It’s an absolute honour to have signed for Aston Villa,” said Hourahine. “Can’t wait to get going.”

Hourihane’s last game for Barnsley was a 3-2 win against promotion hopefuls Leeds where he scored a magnificent winning free-kick.

This season, he has played 28 games in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing an impressive 13 assists.

He will now look to force his way into Steve Bruce’s first team plans as the promotion expert has a number of midfield players to choose from.

Along with new January signings, Lansbury and Bjarnason, the likes of Mile Jedinak, Ashley Westwood, Aaron Tshibola, Gary Gardner, Jack Grealish and Leandro Bacuna have been used in a midfield role in some capacity.

Villa’s next game will be on Tuesday night against Dean Smith’s Brentford where the Midlands club will be looking to end their five-match winless streak.
