Contact made: Newcastle told it would take ‘huge fee’ to sign Werner by Golden Boot winner
Kevin Phillips has claimed Chelsea’s Timo Werner would be a “great signing” for Newcastle amid reported interest.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old is a “really good player” despite his struggles for the Blues.
As reported by Bild journalist Christian Falk yesterday (October 13th), Newcastle are interested in Werner with the club already “regularly in contact” with the German’s agency through defender Fabian Schar.
Chelsea paid a reported £47.6million to activate the former RB Leipzig star’s release clause last summer.
He scored just 12 goals in 52 appearances and has paid the price for his below-par form with the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan.
The Belgian’s arrival has limited Werner’s playing time, with the Germany international making just three Premier League starts so far this term.
Phillips suggested it would take “some fee” to bring Werner to Newcastle, but insisted he would be a “great signing”.
“I think he’s a really good player,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“He’s had a tough time at Chelsea and has come in for criticism for not returning enough goals.
“But when you look at his record in Germany, it’s excellent.
“So if he were to be given time in England, I think he will come good.
“If Newcastle were to get hold of him, persuade him to come, it would be a great signing.
“Whether Chelsea will be willing to let him go is another thing – it would take a huge fee.
“When you look at his attributes – yes, he can give you goals, but his work rate and movement are also fantastic.”

Werner has scored two in eight appearances this term.
His contract runs until 2025.
