Burnley have made contact with Everton over a potential deal to sign midfielder James McCarthy this summer, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claim that the Premier League side are interested in adding the 26-year-old outcast to the ongoing negotiations with Everton over the sale of Michael Keane.

Everton have made the Burnley defender one of their primary transfer targets this summer, and Burnley could look to land McCarthy either as part of the deal, or in a separate agreement.

McCarthy was hampered by injuries throughout the 2016-17 campaign, and was restricted to just 13 appearances in all competitions under Ronald Koeman.

But the Dutchman does not view the Republic of Ireland international as an important part of his first-team plans, having moved to add Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin following his arrival at the club.

The two midfield additions has seen McCarthy slip even further down the pecking order, and Koeman is prepared to cash-in on the player if offered a deal worth at least £20million.

Newcastle and Aston Villa are also understood to be interested in signing the former Wigan regular.

Yet while Everton could look to use McCarthy in an attempt to reduce the cash paid to land Keane, it is believed that McCarthy may not fancy a move to Turf Moor.

Football Insider verdict

McCarthy has to leave Everton this summer. Koeman likes to rotate his options, but the midfielder simply won’t get nearly enough first-team football next season to meet his own needs. The arrivals of Gueye and Schneiderlin have been backed up by the emergence of wonderkid Tom Davies, who will hold a key role next term. Everton’s £20million valuation is a little excessive, but a move to Burnley could be of great benefit to both parties. He would get regular opportunities at Turf Moor, while Everton would not only get a midfielder off the books, but they would also potentially add Keane as part of the deal.
