Premier League giants Tottenham have stepped up their interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter, according to a report.
German news outlet Bild claim that the 23-year-old has already been subject to two offers from top-flight clubs this summer, with Tottenham set to rival Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim for his signature.
Tottenham are in the market for a new centre-back to provide further cover for premier defensive duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, while the future of deputy option Kevin Wimmer is also uncertain.
The Mirror reported earlier this week that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is ready to cut his losses on Wimmer this summer, and had set his asking-price at £20million.
But Wimmer’s potential departure would leave Tottenham lacking in the centre-back department, and it is understood that an approach has already been made for Dortmund first-teamer Ginter.
The 10-time German international made 42 appearances for the Bundesliga giants during the 2016-17 campaign, having moved to the club from rivals Freiburg in 2014.
Ginter is still under contract at Westfalenstadion until the end of the 2018-19 season, but Dortmund have an unflattering habit of allowing their star players to quit the club.
Dortmund have previously lost star trio Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels and Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich, although Gotze has since returned, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could also be on his way out.
Football Insider verdict
The details of Tottenham’s reported approach for Ginter remain unclear, while it also uncertain as to whether they have been issued with a response. However, their reported bid is good news. Whether Tottenham deploy a back-four or a back-three next season, Mauricio Pochettino has recognised the need for further reinforcements in defence, and at a young age of 23, Ginter would be a fine addition. He has already proven his worth to both Dortmund and the German national team, and he could be a fantastic asset to the club. A versatile option, Ginter could also provide cover at right-back, with Kyle Walker likely to quit the club this summer, leaving only Kieran Trippier in the position.
In other Tottenham transfer news, Spurs are reportedly eyeing a £17.5million bid for this Bundesliga sensation.
