Conte ‘promised £200m’ January war chest after Tottenham reveal via Sky – pundit

Antonio Conte may have been “promised £200million” but Tottenham may not sign anybody in the January transfer window, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England right-back delivered his verdict after Spurs were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

As quoted by Sky Sports yesterday (6 January), Conte said there was “no comparison” between the two teams and his side were in the middle of a rebuild.

Tottenham remain undefeated in the Premier League under the Italian but have been knocked out of the Europa Conference League.

“Everybody knew that when he came in,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He said immediately that the gulf may have been bigger than he thought and the quality wasn’t where he thought it was going to be.

“Chelsea are European champions and we were expecting them to go and challenge for the title. They were up there with joint favourites to win the title and still have a chance of doing that with the squad and manager that they have.

“When you look at Chelsea’s squad there is no real surprise. Tottenham would have to be at their very best and Chelsea have an off day for them to get a result. It wasn’t a huge surprise.

“Conte may have been promised £200million but if you can’t get the players out of their clubs in January, which is always difficult especially with covid issues.

“He may well have been promised money and there may well be money there for him but getting the players during this situation where covid is rife and there are extra fixtures with rearranged fixtures means it’s even harder to get players.”
