Rangers manager Graeme Murty has confirmed that the Gers are to open contract talks with in-form forward Josh Windass but is there really any need to offer Windass offer a new deal at the minute?
The 24-year-old senior Ibrox player has been attracting interest from a number of Championship clubs but none have offered anything close to the Ibrox side’s valuation.
Football Insider exclusively revealed that the Light Blues were ready to offer Windass a lucrative new offer, and now Murty has announced that discussions are on-going with the attacker.
Windass’ current deal runs until the summer of 2020 and while the attacker has been in good form recently with five goals in his last 11 appearances, it’s not the kind of form that merits a new contract – yet.
Even during Windass’ purple patch there have still been wild variances in his performances for the Gers.
If Windass can keep his form up until the end of the season then he’ll have earned a new contract but so far, the former Accrington star’s inconsistency means it makes little sense.
With the likes of Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings arriving in the January transfer window then Windass could find his game-time seriously limited if he doesn’t keep up his current form.
A new, improved contract for Windass now could quite feasibly leave the Gers with a highly-paid player axed from the first-team within days of penning a new deal.
Despite clubs showing interest in luring Windass away from Ibrox, the 24-year-old has a £3.5million release clause in his contract and unless it is met by any potential suitors then there’s no need to sell.
After 18 months of inconsistent performances in a Rangers shirt, less than three months of decent form shouldn’t be enough to earn an improved deal.
Windass could very well go on and prove himself worthy of increased term over the second-half of the season but it’s simply far too early now to be rewarding his form.
