Craig Thomson has been named referee for the Betfred Cup Final.

The official will take charge of the game at Hampden Park, which takes place on Sunday, November 26.

Thomson has previously caused some controversy in his handling of prior league cup finals.

In 2010 he sent-off two Rangers players in their match against St Mirren.

A year later he sent-off Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre in the dying seconds of a Celtic-Rangers final.

That game was also notable for Thomson initially giving a penalty when Rangers forward Nikica Jelavic was fouled in the box, but he swiftly changed his mind and booked the ‘Gers striker for diving.

Celtic reached the Betfred Cup Final after defeating Hibs 4-2 in an incident-packed semi-final, which saw both Mikael Lustig and Moussa Dembele score two goals for the Hoops.

The cup final is the first of three games in six days for Celtic and Motherwell – the series continues on the Wednesday night with a game at Fir Park before the teams head back to Celtic Park on the Saturday.

Before this, the Bhoys have to navigate this weekend’s return to league action, with a lunchtime visit to Dingwall to play Ross County, followed by the midweek Champions League game against PSG.
