Alex Bruce has shot down Christian Purslow’s claims that Aston Villa would be at a disadvantage by playing in neutral venues to see out the campaign.
The former top-flight defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that every club is in the same boat and that Villa’s home record is nothing exceptional.
Purslow has publicly voiced his opposition to using neutral grounds to finish the Premier League season, insisting his club would be losing a significant advantage not playing at Villa Park.
With the season currently suspended, 19th-placed Villa have won five of their 13 top-flight fixtures at home this season.
Bruce has laughed off Purslow’s comments about the Villans being at a disadvantage, highlighting how other clubs are facing the same issue should the season return.
Bruce told Football Insider: “I understand him saying that but he’s just going to have to swallow it because everyone’s in the same boat.
“I can understand why it’s going to be detrimental to Villa playing in a neutral ground, because they see Villa Park as a fortress but on the flip side it’s not been that much of a fortress because they’re in the bottom three.
“They’re just going to have to get on with it. It doesn’t surprise me he’s not shy in coming out and saying how it’s bad for Aston Villa but everyone’s in the same boat.
“You could say the same about Newcastle – they’ve got a big quarter-final to play against Man City in the FA Cup. Would you prefer to play in the FA Cup in front of a full house at St James’ Park or play Man City on a neutral ground? I know what I’d rather do.”
Speaking to talkSPORT, Purslow said: “Neutral grounds is just one component in a whole package of measures that are going to have to be debated and discussed. Personally, I am against it.
“We are a club that prides itself on our home form; I think two thirds of our wins this season have come at home. I think any Villa fan will agree that giving up that advantage is a massive decision for somebody running Aston Villa.”
In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED the club have opened talks over a deal for a striker.
