Coventry City next manager: Insider shares Frank Lampard update

Coventry City are keen to appease fans by bringing in a big-name manager to replace Mark Robins, according to the club’s former assistant manager.

Mick Brown, who also spent time as the assistant boss at both Man United and West Brom and remains very well-connected within the game, exclusively told Football Insider that the board are concerned about the recent backlash from supporters.

Frank Lampard is the current favourite to take over, and there is a belief within the club that bringing in a well-known name would help ease the pressure.

Robins’ dismissal left fans enraged after the Sky Blues legend led the side from League Two to the top half of the Championship in seven years in the role.

Lampard, meanwhile, has been out of management since his interim spell with Chelsea in 2023, but is viewed as a leading candidate for the job.

His spells with both Chelsea and Everton have been taken into account, as well as his impressive spell with Derby in 2018-19, in which they came close to winning promotion.

Coventry City manager plan revealed after Mark Robins sacked

The decision to part ways with Robins has not gone down well amongst the supporters, and the potential appointment of Lampard will be met with a mixed reception.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience working closely with managers at the top level, including over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that he was shocked that Robins lost his job.

Nothing surprises me in football now, but I was shocked,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s done so well with a limited budget to get Coventry back to where they are now.

“But one thing I’ve learned is that you get no thanks for that from the club, as soon as you lose a couple of games, you’re looking for a new job.

“I knew Mark at Man United when he was a kid and his journey as a manager has been impressive.

“The job he’s done has gone under the radar, and I’m very sorry he’s lost his job now.

Owners and directors are always afraid of backlash from the supporters, and there’s been a fair bit after this decision. It’s not been a popular one at all.

So they want to bring in a big name to appease them. Someone like Frank [Lampard] fits that bill.

I don’t know how good he is as a manger, but I know they’ve looked at his time at Chelsea and Everton, and were impressed by what he did with Derby County.

Coventry

Ultimately, Coventry want to be in and around the playoffs and that’s something he’s achieved in the past.

“He’ll have learnt from his time elsewhere, and it remains to be seen whether it’ll be a success, but getting the fans onside might prove difficult for him and for the board.”
