Coventry set for Premier League promotion blow as officials ‘jet in’ for Haji Wright talks

Coventry City star Haji Wright could be about to leave the club in a big blow to their promotion hopes as Besiktas’ officials reportedly jet into the East Midlands for talks over a January transfer.

Coventry have been the Championship’s outstanding team this season, after they were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by eventual promotion winners Sunderland at the end of the last campaign.

Frank Lampard‘s side have led the way since the first week of the season and remain top of the second-tier as it stands with 48 points from 22 games so far.

Southampton held Coventry to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, however, and they have won just one of their last four league games, so will surely be planning some January dealings to further bolster Lampard’s squad and seal a long-awaited promotion to the top-flight.

The Chelsea legend will certainly not want to lose any of his key men in the midst of their title charge, but star striker Wright could be on his way after a new development.

Besiktas want to sign Wright in January after Leeds interest

Wright cost Coventry a club record £9million fee when he arrived from Antalyaspor in 2023, and he has certainly lived up to that price tag in the two-and-a-half years since the move.

The USA striker scored 16 goals in 44 appearances in his first season at the club, then bagged 12 in 29 games last term, while he has found the net eight times from 16 outings so far in 2025-26.

Football Insider recently revealed that Leeds are plotting a move for Wright in January to bolster Daniel Farke’s attacking options, but the Sky Blues have remained reluctant to cash in on his services considering their current position in the table.

A new report from Turkish outlet Fanatiz claims that Super Lig giants Besiktas are set to “sit down for talks” with Coventry to try and thrash out a deal for Wright ahead of next month’s window.

Sporx also claim that Besiktas’ chiefs are set to travel to England for said talks, with loan and purchase options being considered, with a return to Turkey potentially on the cards for the 27-year-old.

Wright would be a huge loss for Coventry in the middle of the season

Wright has been doubted by Coventry fans at times for his inconsistencies in front of goal, but it goes without saying that losing him would serve as a huge setback to their Championship promotion aims.

His second-tier goal record over the last two-and-a-half years is much better than any other attacker at Lampard’s disposal, and it would, therefore, make little sense to sell him midway through their biggest season in a long time.

The worry for Sky Blues fans will be that Wright may be open to such a move, considering his previous experience in Turkey and the size of Besiktas compared to Coventry.

They regularly compete for trophies and play in the major European club competitions, and while Lampard’s side look set for promotion to the Premier League, there is still a long way to go until that can be confirmed.

Wright could leave the CBS Arena to join the Super Lig giants very soon, and his exit may well be the catalyst to Coventry’s downfall in the second half of the campaign.
