'Outstanding' - Brown raves about Rangers 28-year-old, says he deserves international call-up

Former Motherwell and Scotland manager Craig Brown insists it isn’t a surprise to see Jamie Murphy do so well at Ibrox after joining Rangers on loan from Brighton last month.
Murphy has almost immediately became a key part of Graeme Murty’s side as the Gers try and close down Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic and scored his second goal in two games in Sunday’s 5-3 win over Hamilton.
Murphy also had a hand in setting up three of the Gers goals as they leapfrogged Derek McInnes Aberdeen in second-place in the league after the Dons’ defeat by Hibs 24 hours earlier.
The former Motherwell winger played under Brown at Fir Park where he shattered the Steelmen’s record for goals scored in Europe and Brown thinks the 28-year-old could fire himself into the Scotland squad under new boss Alex McLeish.
“I’m not surprised to see Jamie doing so well for Rangers,” Brown said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
“He was outstanding for me at Motherwell. I remember him scoring the winner in a Europa League qualifier against Breidablik in Iceland to equal Stevie Kirk’s long-standing club record of European goals. In the next round he broke the record when he scored against Aalesunds of Norway.
“I know from my time as Scotland manager that you don’t like being told which players to pick but if you are asking me if Jamie Murphy is good enough to play for Scotland, then the answer is absolutely yes.”
Rangers have an agreement to make Murphy’s loan deal a permanent switch in the summer and it is almost certain that the Gers will take that up and keep the winger at Ibrox long-term.
The winger has scored twice and created five goals in his seven appearances since joining his boyhood heroes last month.
Murphy will almost certainly be involved when the Gers face Hearts at Ibrox on Saturday in a must-win Scottish Premiership clash for Murty’s side with Celtic travelling to Pittodrie to take on Aberdeen the following day.
