Cristian Romero ‘punished by Tottenham’ amid incredible Daniel Levy claim

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Cristian Romero will have been punished by Tottenham after his outburst about a lack of spending.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Spurs “can’t be accused of not investing” and claimed the centre-back would’ve been “best advised” to avoid speaking publicly.

Speaking live to Spanish TV after Tottenham lost 4-3 at home against Chelsea earlier this month, Romero said: “Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results.

“Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they [the board] realise it.”

The defender has since apologised for his controversial comments, according to manager Ange Postecoglou – who has faced sack calls after poor results in the 2024-25 campaign so far.

Romero is currently out injured after breaking down just 15 minutes into his return against Chelsea.

Cristian Romero ‘doesn’t understand’ business side at Tottenham, says Keith Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s free speech, he’s entitled to make his feelings known.

“He’s then had to deal with the consequences of that, which I’m sure won’t have been popular.

“A player won’t understand the situation with the stadium, the costs, the budget.

“It’s alright for players who want to say ‘spend, spend, spend’ – but they don’t have the consequences if they don’t perform.

“I think it’s best for players not to make comments about the business side, unless they’re very well-informed.

“It’s well-known that Spurs have been stop-start for a number of seasons, but there’s every chance they will click – Postecoglou was hailed as a hero last season.

Tottenham

“It’s football. Spurs can’t be accused of not investing. There could have been more investment, but it’s a complicated matrix. I think Levy has done a great job over the years.

“Was Romero wrong? I think he’d have been best advised to not go down that route, but it’s free speech.”
