‘Cristian Romero to Atletico latest as key Tottenham update emerges’

Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham remains unresolved with Atletico Madrid continuing to pursue the defender amid a new transfer update.

The 27-year-old, who has two years remaining on his current Spurs contract, joined the club from Atalanta in 2021.

The Argentine has become a key player in Spurs’ back-line and has been linked with a move away from North London this summer.

Romero was part of the team that made history by securing Spurs’ first European trophy in 17 years against Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Romero could leave Spurs this summer.

Spurs deny Atletico deal

Atletico Madrid have showed interested in Liverpool defender Andy Robinson and have identified Romero as one of their top targets.

Spurs do not want to sell the Argentine, but The Telegraph (30 June) report that Romero’s future at Spurs is still uncertain, although sources at the club have denied that there has been a fee agreed for the defender with Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid can refocus their attention on the transfer market after being involved in the Club World Cup.

The Spanish side failed to make it out of the group stage despite wins against Seattle Sounders and Botafogo.

Spurs could pursue Guehi if Romero departs

Football Insider verdict

Diego Simeone wants to strengthen his defence with the signing of Romero, and it looks like this saga could run to the end of the window.

Romero’s aggressive defensive style suits a Simeone team and after four years at Spurs the defender could want a fresh challenge.

He would leave the Premier League club on a high after their Europa League success.

For new Spurs manager Thomas Frank losing the centre-back partnership of Romero and Micky van de Ven would be a blow.

The pair complement each other well and Spurs have tended to be a tougher unit to break down with those two in the side.

Spurs have been linked with Marc Guehi and Romero’s departure could open the door for the club to move for the 24-year-old.

The club do have Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin as options, but neither have yet to fully convince in a Spurs shirt, and the signing of Guehi would soften the blow if Romero was to leave.
