‘Cristian Romero to be stripped of Tottenham captaincy after Man United disgrace’

Cristian Romero has hit the headlines again for Tottenham as he was sent off in their 2-0 defeat away at Manchester United on Saturday.

The Argentine was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Casemiro in the 29th minute of the clash at Old Trafford, and the hosts wasted no time in using their numerical advantage to good effect.

Bryan Mbeumo scored the opener for Manchester United less than 10 minutes after Romero was sent for an early bath, before Bruno Fernandes sealed the points for Michael Carrick’s side in the 81st minute.

Thomas Frank and his staff are currently dealing with a major injury crisis, and they will now also have to live without their club captain for the next four games as he serves his suspension.

Thomas Frank to act on ‘disgraceful’ Cristian Romero incident

Tottenham fans have torn into Romero in the aftermath of his sending off, which has left his team facing yet more hardship in the coming weeks.

The centre-back has now been sent off for Spurs six times in all competitions since making his debut in August 2021, but Frank and his previous bosses have still opted to stand by the defender.

However, that could now be about to change following the 27-year-old’s latest misdemeanour, who has also been under scrutiny of late after a critical Instagram post towards the club.

French journalist Julien Laurens has now suggested that he feels that Romero should be stripped of the Tottenham captaincy by Frank, after his “disgraceful” sending off last weekend.

“They should have never given him the armband. That is the thing at the heart of all of this,” Laurens said on BBC 5Live’s Football Daily podcast.

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha then asked Laurens whether Spurs should now strip him of the armband completely.

“100 per cent,” the journalist responded.

“That red card, it’s disgraceful. The fact that Romero has had six red cards in his Spurs career, and no manager has really told him off, that’s why he keeps doing it.”

Ex-PGMOL chief reacts to Romero red card for Tottenham

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett exclusively told Football Insider that referee Michael Oliver was correct to show Romero a straight red card.

However, the former official blasted the refereeing governing body for the lack of consistency that they have shown with challenges akin to this one throughout the season.

Hackett felt that Romero’s tackle constituted serious foul play, as he planted his studs into the ankle of Casemiro, but he also outlined that incidents of a similar nature had gone unpunished earlier in the campaign.

He called for the PGMOL to show greater consistency when dealing with incidents of this nature, and stressed that the laws need to be interpreted in the same manner in every game.
