Crystal Palace ‘doing everything’ to finalise Oliver Glasner deal
Crystal Palace are prepared to do everything in their power to agree a new contract with Oliver Glasner despite rising tensions behind the scenes.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the 51-year-old’s future in South London with just one year remaining on his deal.
The fall-out from Marc Guehi‘s failed deadline day move to Liverpool has left concerns behind the scenes about the manager’s long-term future at Selhurst Park.
Football Insider revealed on 6 September that Crystal Palace fear Glasner could leave and join their Premier League rivals upon the expiry of his contract.
The boss threatened to walk away from his position if the club captain was sold on deadline day without an adequate replacement, causing the move to fall through.
However, Football Insider revealed on 17 August that Glasner has grown frustrated at Crystal Palace as a result of a lack of direction and ambition in the transfer market.
Crystal Palace to offer Oliver Glasner new contract
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Palace want Glasner to sign a new contract following their historic FA Cup win in May.
However, doubts have emerged about the manager’s desire to remain in South London after a frustrating summer in which the board struggled to back his ambitious plans.
O’Rourke explained that Glasner staying at Palace cannot be ruled out, and they will work hard to keep him at the club, but it may prove difficult.
“I wouldn’t say there’s no chance of him staying,” he told Football Insider.
“Obviously things are a bit more tense now behind the scenes, there’s no getting away from that.
“He got his way this time in the end, with the club deciding to keep Marc Guehi and turn down the offer from Liverpool at the last minute.
“That shows the power Glasner has at Selhurst Park, and rightly so.
“He’s done a wonderful job at Palace, winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield.
“So Palace are doing everything they can to convince Glasner to sign a new contract.
“But the manager knows he’s in a strong position with only a year left on his deal.”
Rangers, Coventry and Sheffield United move to sign Rak-Sakyi
Glasner may not be the only one leaving Palace in the near future, with Jesurun Rak-Sakyi expected to leave despite having missed out on a move in the summer.
Football Insider revealed on 7 September that Rangers, Sheffield United and Coventry want Rak-Sakyi and made late moves to sign him on deadline day.
All three clubs could reignite their interest in January as he is not expected to play a big part under Glasner, who has other options in his position.
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 5 September that Crystal Palace will entertain offers for Rak-Sakyi in the mid-season window despite turning down summer bids.
