Crystal Palace form surprise alliance with giants in ‘huge’ twist – Kieran Maguire

Crystal Palace and other Premier League clubs are forming “unusual alliances” over new proposals to change rules and regulations.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Palace chairman Steve Parish is eager to change the financial rules to help clubs outside the ‘Big Six’ when they qualify for Europe.

Ahead of the Premier League’s annual general meeting this summer, Crystal Palace proposed a rule change to increase the losses allowed under PSR for clubs competing in Europe to counteract Uefa’s coefficient system.

It would give extra financial flexibility to clubs who qualify for Europe but won’t receive the same payout as the established elite.

As revealed by Football Insider, multiple Premier League clubs have already shown support for Palace’s proposed rule change.

Crystal Palace vote is forming new alliances in Premier League

Maguire explained that Parish will have future ambitions for Palace in Europe but the proposal also reflects new “alliances” being formed in the Premier League.

I think there’s an element of this representing Palace’s ambitions and also being political,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Steve Parish has had a bee in his bonnet for some time with regards to the Uefa coefficient and what he sees as a closed shop in terms of the financial benefits of qualifying for Europe.

We are seeing unusual alliances between clubs forming these days.

It used to be the Big Six versus the other 14, but there’s been a huge shifting of the sands as far as which clubs are friends within the Premier League.

There’s no doubt that Steve Parish does have long-term ambitions for Crystal Palace.

Perhaps he thinks that he’s setting himself up for a long-term benefit should Palace get new owners, move to a new ground and become competitive towards the top end of the table.
